Crooklands Mill Garage has a team of 6 mechanics who between them have around 300 years’ experience. We are constantly updating and upgrading both equipment and our own skills/knowledge base to keep up with the continually changing technology of the automotive industry. Under the watchful eye of Steve, everyone works closely as a team, giving the benefit of everyone’s knowledge to the trickier situations that arise from time to time.
The ethos here is very much that we do as we would be done by, work hard and put the customer first. We want to keep our local community safely on the road and to offer the sort of service that we would wish to see our own families receive from their local garages. It is exactly this approach to work that has seen our business grow and thrive over the past 65 years.
The business was first started in 1949 by Brian Hunter just a stone’s throw away from its present location. Brian’s son, Steve Hunter now takes charge of the day to day running of things and is joined by family members Drew and Pete who look after the MOTs and goods in/out respectively.
Back in the early days, the garage was actually a wooden hut located near the end of the Milnthorpe road. After a few years, a new location became available for on the other side of the road, perhaps with more parking, and the shed was moved, complete with a hen’s nest and clutch of eggs!
The Bobbin Mill , where the garage is now, closed down in the late 1920s when the machinery was all moved up to Sawrey. The building then became a wood yard making gates and hen huts but after around 20 years in business, the owner decided to sell up and approached Brian Hunter about perhaps swapping his shed for a real building, which was obviously appealing to him as here we all are today! Since then, the business has grown and flourished and we are proud to look after the vehicles of 3 generations of a lot of local families!
